Armenian culture is born of conflict, whether between Romans and Seleucids, Byzantines and Arabs, Seljuk Turks and Mongols, Ottomans and Persians. Christianity emerged early in the 4th century, and became part of the Armenian identity, in the mist of the conflict. The exhibit Armenia Sacra which is at the Louvre from February 21, to May 21, 2007, is a journey through the art and sacred objects of Armenia throughout the power struggles.
Through a tour with one of the exhibit's currators, this piece explores the myth at the base of Armenian Christianity (which involves 40 virgins and a wild boar), and looks at how the mix of cultures influenced Armenian art.
