Inspired by Aaron Ximm's
one minute vacations, I found a minute in some tape I recorded on May 1, 2002, at the May-Day march in Paris.
Traditionally on May 1st,
May-Day marches and rallies are held all over France. In 2002,
the extreme right 'Front Nationale' party's leader, Jean-Marie Le Pen, had
just made it to the second round of presidential elections in France, so
the May-Day marches turned into anti-Le Pen marches. Everyone expected
violence to break out all over the country. But the day was in fact more
peaceful than it had ever been. In Paris, families were out with their children, and
there was music everywhere. I wandered through the parade from one
music-blaring group to another. At the end of this minute is the chant
that everyone was saying/singing that day: "Abat, le Front Nationale--et F comme
fasciste et N comme nazi." (Bring down the 'Front Nationale'--F like fascist
and N like nazi).
